چکیده

Earth’s core may contain C, and it has been suggested that C in the core could stabilize the formation of a solid inner core composed of Fe3C. We experimentally examined the Fe–C system at a pressure of 5 GPa and determined the Fe–C phase diagram at this pressure. In addition, we measured solid metal/liquid metal partition coefficients for 17 trace elements and examined the partitioning behavior between Fe3C and liquid metal for 14 trace elements. Solid metal/liquid metal partition coefficients are similar to those found in one atmosphere studies, indicating that the effect of pressure to 5 GPa is negligible. All measured Fe3C/liquid metal partition coefficients investigated are less than one, such that all trace elements prefer the C-rich liquid to Fe3C. Fe3C/liquid metal partition coefficients tend to decrease with decreasing atomic radii within a given period. Of particular interest, our 5 GPa Fe–C phase diagram does not show any evidence that the Fe-Fe3C eutectic composition shifts to lower C contents with increasing pressure, which is central to the previous reasoning that the inner core may be composed of Fe3C. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Iron silicides at pressures of the Earth’s inner core

[1] The Earth’s core is expected to contain around 10 wt % light elements (S, Si, O, possibly C, H, etc.) alloyed with Fe and Ni. Very little is known about these alloys at pressures and temperatures of the core. Here, using the evolutionary crystal structure prediction methodology, we investigate FeSi compounds at pressures of up to 400 GPa, i.e. covering the pressure range of the Earth’s core...

HIGH PRESSURE, NEAR-LIQUIDUS PHASE RELATIONS IN Fe-C-S SYSTEMS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR COMPOSITION, STRUCTURE, AND PROCESS OF FORMATION OF METALLIC CORES IN PLANETARY

Introduction: The Earth’s outer core is known to be ~10% less dense than pure metallic Fe-Ni liquid [1, 2] and thus is thought to contain ~10% light elements [e.g., 1] with proposed candidates including sulfur (S), carbon (C), oxygen (O), hydrogen (H), and silicon (Si). The presence of minor, lighter alloying elements is also argued for metallic cores of other planetary bodies including inner t...

High-pressure polymorphism of Fe2P and its implications for meteorites and Earth’s core

[1] Minerals with composition (Fe,Ni)2P, are rare, though important accessory phases in iron and chondritic meteorites. The occurrence of these minerals in meteorites is believed to originate either from the equilibrium condensation of protoplanetary materials in solar nebulae or from the later accretion and condensation processes in the cores of parent bodies. Fe-Ni phosphides are considered a...

Thermal equation of state of Fe3S and implications for sulfur in Earth’s core

[1] Iron (Fe) and coexisting Fe3S were studied simultaneously using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and a laser-heated diamond anvil cell (DAC). The thermal equation of state (EOS) of Fe3S was investigated up to pressures of 80 GPa and temperatures of 2500 K. Fitting a third-order Birch-Murnaghan EOS to the room temperature data yielded bulk modulus K0 = 156(7) GPa (values in parentheses are stan...
